A health professional who has special training and advanced education in diet and nutrition and human diseases. Registered dietitians complete a board exam and are licensed in the state of Florida to ensure that training is evidenced-based and continued training is completed. Registered dietitians offer advice on nutrition and healthy eating habits to help people improve their health and well-being.
Coverage for nutrition counseling will vary by insurance provider and by plan. Often RD services are out of network and self-pay. We do not current bill through insurance.
Seeing a dietitian is worth it! Most people would agree that long-term benefits, such as more energy, sustained weight loss, a healthy relationship with food, and better health are always worth your time and money. It's no secret that eating a nutritious diet improves your overall health and well-being
No, Registered Dietitians cannot prescribe medication. Only licensed healthcare professionals who have completed specific education and training in prescribing medications, such as medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, should and can prescribe medications.
“Nutritionist” was added to the RD name for the purpose of encompassing a broader concept of wellness, and the prevention and treatment of conditions. This distinction highlights that all registered dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. Dietitians go through more standardized training and advance education than nutritionists, and are able to offer more specialized services, like medical nutrition therapy.
Registered Dietitians can treat clinical medical issues as well as provide nutrition information to the general public. They often work with people in clinical settings, battling eating disorders, residing in nursing homes, or living with medical conditions that require specific diets (cancer, diabetes, etc.). As such, dietitians must complete advanced training and often can only practice with a state-issued license.
Nutritionists typically offer more general nutritional advice. While they often work in gyms, health food stores, and other less medically-oriented environments, they may also work in some of the same places as their RD colleagues. However, Nutritionist can’t offer specific medical treatment and may not have the extensive education to provide safe nutrition advice. Some states require nutritionists to hold an occupational license, but others don’t regulate the role at all.
